The Maldives is consistently ranked among the world's top diving destinations, and for good reason. With over 1,000 coral islands spread across 26 atolls, the archipelago offers everything from gentle reef dives to exhilarating drift channels and big animal encounters.
North Malé Atoll
The most accessible diving region from Malé international airport. Baros Reef and Cocoa Thila feature stunning coral formations, resident white-tip reef sharks, and frequent turtle sightings. Currents here are moderate, making these excellent sites for intermediate divers.
For macro photography enthusiasts, Hulhambeh offers pristine coral gardens with frogfish, ghost pipefish, and the occasional blue-ringed octopus. Visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres.
South Ari Atoll (Ari Atoll)
The Ari Atoll marine protected area is famous for whale shark aggregations. Diving with these gentle giants — averaging 8–12 metres in length — is a life-list experience available almost year-round. Maalhos Thila and Bathala Thila are the flagship sites, with dense fish life and regular mantas visiting cleaning stations.
North and South Nilandhe Atolls (Laamu Atoll)
More remote, with fewer crowds and more pristine reefs. Expect manta rays, large schools of chevron barracuda, and exceptional visibility. Liveaboards departing from Laamu offer access to sites rarely visited by resort divers.
Best Time to Dive the Maldives
The northeast monsoon (December–May) brings calm seas and excellent visibility. The southwest monsoon (June–November) is better for pelagic encounters and bigger waves. Water temperature stays between 26–30°C year-round — a 3mm wetsuit is sufficient.
Certification & Experience
Most resort dive centres require PADI Open Water or equivalent. Advanced divers can access deeper channel dives and wreck sites. Check with your dive operator for drift diving experience requirements.
Getting There
Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé is the main hub. Domestic seaplanes and speedboats connect to outer atolls. Liveaboards depart from Malé and offer the most cost-effective way to visit multiple atolls.
