Raja Ampat — the Four Kings Islands — sits at the very heart of the Coral Triangle, the centre of global marine biodiversity. West Papua, Indonesia's archipelago holds more fish species and coral diversity than anywhere else on Earth: 75% of all known coral species and over 1,400 fish species call these waters home.
Misool and the Marine Reserve
The southern islands of Misool are Raja Ampat's most pristine zone. Manta ray cleaning stations on the shallow reef flats — mantas queue up to get cleaned by cleaner wrasse. The dive operation at Misool marEco Conservancy is community-run with strict daily diver limits.
Loggerhead turtles and wobbegong sharks are common on the reef slope. The coral cover here is extraordinary — some of the healthiest in the entire archipelago.
Dampier Strait
The narrow channel between Waigeo and the Dampier Strait is one of the most biodiverse corridors in Raja Ampat. Wobbegong sharks rest on the sandy bottom, schooling barracuda circle the current lines, and Bumphead parrotfish aggregate in large numbers.
Strong currents are part of the dive — drift diving experience is necessary. The best encounters happen when the tidal currents peak, bringing pelagics through the channel.
Wayag Islands — Remote Expedition Diving
The Wayag limestone karst islands are the icon of Raja Ampat — the classic turquoise lagoon and dramatic karst scenery visible from above. Below the surface, expedition diving takes you to pristine sites no other operator visits. Manta rays, turtle nesting beaches, and extraordinary visibility.
Access is by multi-day live-aboard only. These are expedition dives for experienced divers comfortable with remote operations.
Piaynemo — Bird's Head Seascape
The bird's head seascape north of Piaynemo is one of the most photographically stunning dive zones in Raja Ampat. Dramatic underwater topography — peaks and valleys carpeted in dense coral and fish life. Large schools of fusilers, snapper, and trevally. Macro life in the shallows.
A land-based operation with a panoramic viewpoint trek to a Karst ridge above the dive sites — spectacular above and below water.
Kawe Islands — Hammerhead Aggregation
Kawe is one of the best places in Raja Ampat to encounter scalloped hammerhead sharks in the blue. The Eastern edge of Kawe holds a cleaning station where hammerheads pause for cleaning before continuing into the deep. Manta rays present year-round.
Advanced and experienced divers only — deep water entries, strong currents, and significant depth (25–40m) at the cleaning station.
Best Time to Dive Raja Ampat
October through April is the optimal season — calm seas, excellent visibility, and the best marine encounters. Manta rays are reliable year-round; hammerheads peak November–February. Water temperature 28–31°C — a thin wetsuit or skinsuit is sufficient in the north; a 3mm is better in the south.
Gear Recommendations
Raja Ampat's combination of warm water, strong drift sites, liveaboard-heavy logistics, and deep expedition dives rewards divers who choose gear purposefully. Here is what to prioritise for each category.
Wetsuit
Water temperature in the north (Wayag, Piaynemo) runs 29–31 °C — a 3 mm shortie or a full-body skinsuit is ideal: enough protection against jellyfish stings without overheating. In the south around Misool, and on thermocline dives at Kawe down to 25–30 m, temperatures can drop to 24 °C; a 3 mm full suit is more comfortable here. If you plan Kawe hammerhead dives, carry a thin hood — the thermocline at depth is noticeable and a cold neck takes the edge off an otherwise excellent dive.
BCD
A wing-style BCD is strongly recommended for Raja Ampat's drift sites. The Dampier Strait and Kawe carry significant current, and a horizontal trim reduces drag so you move with the water rather than fighting it. Integrated weight pockets are a practical advantage on liveaboards where kitting up on a moving boat is the norm — a separate weight belt is one less thing to manage at the stern. Make sure your wing has enough lift for the cylinder size your operator uses; most Raja Ampat liveaboards provide steel 12 L cylinders.
Regulator
Most Raja Ampat liveaboard operators supply DIN cylinders, so a DIN first stage — or an A-clamp with a DIN adapter — avoids compatibility surprises at the dive deck. A balanced first stage matters at depth: Kawe and Wayag expedition sites reach 30–40 m with multi-dive days, and an unbalanced regulator that works fine at 15 m can feel noticeably harder to breathe at 40 m after three previous dives. A balanced downstream second stage with a wide bore hose rounds out the setup; the Dampier Strait's current can spike breathing rates and you want the regulator to keep up.
Dive Computer
A wrist computer with nitrox support is effectively mandatory for the deeper sites — Kawe and Wayag run multi-dive days to 25–40 m, and nitrox extends your bottom time and reduces nitrogen loading on back-to-back dives. Air-integrated models earn their keep on liveaboard schedules: three to four dives per day means tracking tank pressure dive after dive, and a transmitter lets you see remaining gas without the interruption of reading the gauge. A built-in compass is genuinely useful on the current-driven drifts of the Dampier Strait, where visibility can be 20 m+ but the current has turned you 90 degrees without your guide noticing.
