Best Dive Sites in Bonaire: The Caribbean Shore Diving Capital

28 June 2026
Guide

Bonaire is widely regarded as the world's premier shore-diving destination — no boat required. The tiny Dutch Caribbean island off Venezuela's coast hosts over 87 marked dive sites, most accessible directly from shore with minimal current and exceptional visibility year-round.

Karpata Ecological Resort

Karpata on the island's western shore is both a top dive site and an ecological success story. The rocky entry leads to a sloping reef with sea turtles, eagle rays, and pristine coral. Turtle nesting season runs August through December. The resort runs marine monitoring programs divers can participate in.

The site is perfect for intermediate divers comfortable with entries over rocky terrain. Water temperature holds 26–29°C year-round.

Salt Pier

The old salt pier at the southern end of Kralendijk is Bonaire's most iconic dive site. The concrete pilings are encrusted in gorgonian sea fans, sponges, and tube sponges — a macro photographer's paradise. Frogfish, seahorses, and juvenile drum fish are regular sightings.

Night dives here are spectacular — octopus, lobsters, and Spanish lobster emerge after dark. Best accessed with a local guide who knows the entry point.

800 Anchor / Northern Walls

The dramatic wall dives on Bonaire's Atlantic side — 800 Anchor and Oil Sail — are for experienced divers. Strong currents and deep drop-offs reward those comfortable with drift diving. The wall drops to 1,000m+ and hosts white-tip reef sharks, tarpon, and occasional hammerheads at the cleaning stations.

Southern Reefs — Angel City and Punt Kachu

The southern sites offer gentler conditions — perfect for beginners and snorkellers. Vibrant coral gardens, parrotfish, and calm water. The marine life here is less pressured than the northern walls and the coral is colourful.

Best Time to Dive Bonaire

Bonaire dives year-round. The dry season (February–June) brings the calmest seas and clearest water. Hurricane season (July–November) occasionally affects conditions but Bonaire is outside the main hurricane belt. Water temperature 26–29°C — a 3mm wetsuit is sufficient year-round.
