Diving Roatán Honduras: Walls, Channels & Caribbean Reef Culture

28 June 2026
Guide

Roatán is the largest of Honduras's Bay Islands — a 48km-long chunk of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef that runs second only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef in length. The island blends Caribbean dive culture with affordable prices and a remarkable variety of dive terrain.

The Vertical Wall

Roatán's southern shore drops sharply to 1,000m+. The Vertical Wall is the island's signature dive — dramatic drop-offs, resident white-tip reef sharks, and enormous Gorgonian sea fans. Mary's Place is another must-do: a series of vertical swim-throughs and pinnacles along the wall face. Advanced divers only due to depth and current.

Blue Channel

The famous Blue Channel runs along the eastern edge of the reef shelf where it meets deep Caribbean water. Drift diving at its finest — expect eagle rays, tarpon, and schooling jacks. On the drop-off, grey reef sharks are common. The current can be strong — drift diving experience is essential.

Sandy Bay and the West End Marine Reserve

The shallow reefs of Sandy Bay and West End offer a completely different experience: macro life, coral gardens, and turtles on every dive. Frogfish, secretary blennies, and extraordinary Gorgonian fields make this prime underwater photography territory.

The West End Marine Reserve is community-run — the local dive operators fund coral restoration and reef monitoring. Diving here directly supports marine conservation in the Bay Islands.

East Port Royal — Pristine and Remote

The least-visited dive zone on Roatán, east Port Royal requires a full boat ride to reach. Pristine reefs with minimal diver traffic — horse-eye jacks, turtles, and unspoiled coral. Expedition day trips and live-aboard access only. For experienced divers wanting to explore beyond the main sites.

Best Time to Dive Roatán

Year-round diving — water temperature 26–29°C. Best visibility January through April. Whale sharks appear December through February off the island's east end. Hurricane season June–November occasionally affects conditions but the island's geography generally shields the dive sites.
